Here is something interesting that I found on ageism
And it may not just be the elderly who are harmed by ageism. A new study in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, suggests that young, healthy people who stereotype old people may themselves be at risk of heart disease many years down the road. Researchers Becca Levy and Martin D. Slade of the Yale School of Public Health, along with Alan B. Zonderman and Luigi Ferrucci from the National Institute on Aging Intramural Research Program, examined data on hundreds of men and women who have been studied for almost four decades as part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Back in 1968, when scientists began studying these volunteers, they ranged in age from 18 to 49 and were all in good health. At that time, scientists gathered all sorts of information about the volunteers, including their attitudes toward the elderly. Their images of being old covered the gamut from very positive to very negative.

Interesting article. It is important information as well. I know we don't always realize it, but what we do and think when we are young apparently affects in many different ways when we are older. I did not know this was one of them.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree that is very interesting since I would not have thought about it like that.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand it has always been a thought of mine that when people are prejudice against another group of people such as racism/sexism/ageism/whatever they are ultimately only harming themselves.
For instance, we should be constantly looking for the best person/ company to buy from and or do work from us to be most efficient. If we refuse to go to a diner that has the best/ cheapest food simply because of black people working their we are depriving ourselves of that cheaper, better service.
Not only the economic factor of prejudice but I have always believed that when you send out negativity towards other people that negativity will linger around and come back at you in ways you don't even realize.
I found this article very interesting, I always enjoy new ways of thinking about challenges... that way when I'm in a debate with someone I have more to say :)
